Hale pu'uhonua (Sanctuary) is a two photograph composite shot on the Big Island of Hawaii just after the visit of Hurricane Lālā (Limb of a tree; angle of wind). It is part of my Petroglyphs Series.
The tree and branch components are "arborealglyphics" on the coastal berm of the Kaloko Honokōhau National Historical Park where walls of ancient fish ponds can be viewed. The polished wood and acute angle convey the cataclysmic forces of nature (volcanic, oceanic, atmospheric) that make up this paradise.
The Hale ("house) component was a roof tile blown to the ground at my feet. It reflects the multifaceted relationship inhabitants have with nature and ourselves across time. Inside the walls is the sanctuary community and shelter.
