Needing to reinvigorate my work, I attended a 5-day Abstractionist residency with Judith Kruger at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. The result was to release an astounding new channel of expression for me.
I paint on canvas and add mixed media elements. Then I cut, tear, wash and manipulate the canvas. It is not a painting, not a collage, and not textile, rather a fusion of all three. This gives a viewer so much to discover. View it from different angles. Look into the folds, find the shadows, encounter new details. Experience how the 2-dimensional painting morphs into a 3-dimensional piece.
After it was painted, “Mantle” was sliced into sections. Some of these were reversed and sewn back together. This reversal creates ambiguity: is this the inside or the outside, the front side, or the back?
With further manipulation, the work becomes 3-dimensional. I could not have generated this outcome any other way.
