The Port of Call Series was shot in January 2022 on North Caicos Island and it is an exercise in ABSTRACT REALISM built on the wabi sabi of a section of my model, a ship that has carried many people and goods in the past. Here it is a symbol of the voyages of humanity on a planetary time scale. It has reached its final port of call but the journey for the descendant crew continues on.
This particular piece. "Angle of Repose," has a subtitle based on a viewer who suggested to me that this piece should be rotated and when studied in this manner, for both Ryan and me, the woman's figure became very evident to us. Perhaps she is reflecting on the journey of her life or is dreaming of her sailor across the sea. I love that about abstract art, especially when a viewer gives me a whole new translation of a piece that then comes the way I see it too so strongly.
These are composites that are built on a single shot sculpted and recombined in different ways in my digital darkroom.
