Framed in one-inch maple wood. So many people think these berries are grapes. They are not. Their name “phytolacca” means red dye plant and that’s what we used them for when we were children. When they are poked, a red-magenta liquid squirts out. We didn’t know then that the berries are very poisonous. I hadn’t seen a poke berry plant for years until I went to my sister’s house in North Carolina. Her husband was planning on getting rid of it since it really is a weed bush, but he waited until I sketched it.
