Bristlecone pines grow at high altitude in rocky areas with little rainfall. Because they are often exposed to high wind and extreme cold, they grow in fantastic curved shapes with exposed wood grain and frequently look more dead than alive. Like this image, the roots are often above ground and have sinuous abstract forms. The Ancient Bristlecone Preserve in the White Mountains of Eastern California is one of my favorite places to photograph, offering endless chances to capture images like this.
